The Black Metropolis Research Consortium(BMRC) is pleased to offer two (2) scholarships for in-person attendance to the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists for MLIS students or recent graduates (2021 and later) who are Black/African American or members of the African Diaspora (including Afro-Latine, Afro-Indigenous, etc) .

The SAA Annual Meeting will take place in Chicago,IL from August 14 to 17, 2024. The scholarship includes attendance to the conference and a one-year membership in the Society of American Archivists.

Founded in 2006, the Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) is a Chicago-based association of more than twenty institutions - community-based, academic and government archives, libraries, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations, all of which hold records relevant to Black history and culture. The mission of the BMRC is to connect all who seek to document, share, understand and preserve Black experiences with an emphasis on the geographic area of the city of Chicago.

The BMRC-SAA scholarship addresses the paucity and significant under-representation of Black/African American/African Diaspora archivists in the field and to support those who otherwise would not be able to attend the annual meeting. We hope to help in the process of place-making for Black archivists to help retain them, their talents and viewpoints.

Applicants for this scholarship should submit a 500 to 1000 word statement here. They should explain their interest in attending the SAA Annual Meeting, in the field of archives in general, and how they expect to benefit from the experience. Those awarded the scholarships will be asked to write briefly about their experience at SAA for a post that will be shared on the BMRC website.

Applications should be submitted by April 12, 2024.
